GAME ON: Medicine and Sports

GAME ON

Pursuing my career in med school and whirling in the tide of my sports career are two different worlds being brought together with a lot of difficulty and discipline in my life as a medical student and it has not stopped me from reaching for both.

Sports being my passion and a blessed gift, I really love dipping into it and exploiting it. I am a rugby player for a MUK club, Impis Rugby Football Club.

It is really any exhilarating experience as doing what I love together with the adrenaline drive of the game making me appreciate the life it brings in me. I think it was just meant to be since I just got a chance to be at MUK where rugby is upholder (I would have been anywhere else; I can’t imagine it) and perhaps I spend next to nothing for the transport really.

Now that you are well equipped with the facts as to why I do the sport (yes not much), lets get to the nitty grittiest. The main thing is balancing the two. It comes down to split seconds. After a hectic day of class next thing would be to freshen up for a good day rest but no- it’s always time to pack up my gears and head for training you know to sow the seed for the next game’s win, so I get to progress in both like a normal student without much hiccups.

Game day is Saturday mostly at 4pm, there are no lectures and a Saturday discussion from 9am to 2pm. The pieces fit in just right. It’s not only about the game day. It’s about the extra days put in to make that day count. The workout in the gym, the stretches, the burns and sprains my God. Not forgetting to study with an Icepack on the rectus abdominis. It’s not always this intense, most times it’s my solace from the days stress.

The momentum is high, but I don’t see myself stopping. My team, my support system brings the best in each one of us together and establishing a sporty mentorship. However not forgetting my friends filling me in with schoolwork, I can’t be less grateful. In the end, I know am in the right place making my move on the field and with my unwavering determination, I will carry two titles on my shoulder.
